ABOUT ME
Stephen is a third-generation Australian cinematographer with a lifetime of working behind the movie camera and a career highlighted by numerous international accolades and awards.
The Australian native’s career began in television for the prestigious network Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), originating as a news and documentary cameraman.
His aspirations then led him to Hollywood where his international career began. Since this time he has collaborated with many directors and producers including F. Gary Gray, Justin Lin, Neal Moritz, Jon M. Chu, Kevin Costner, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Tony To, J.J Abrams, Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis, Renny Harlin, Kevin Reynolds, Dwight Little, Timothy Van Patten, Graham Yost, David Nutter, Jaume Collet-Serra, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, James Wan and Stephan Elliott to name a few.
Stephen is currently filming The Gray Man for Netflix. Recently released F9: The Fast Saga was his sixth journey with the incredibly successful Fast and Furious franchise, for Universal Pictures. During his association with The Fast and Furious family, Windon forged a deep connection with Director, Justin Lin, that resulted in their collaboration on Star Trek: Beyond for Paramount Pictures, released in 2016. It also marked a return to Paramount as Stephen had previously filmed their 3D action adventure G.I. Joe: Retaliation, starring Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum. He collaborated with this same prestigious studio on Sonic the Hedgehog, due for release in 2020.
In 2010, Windon received an Emmy nomination for ‘Outstanding Cinematography for a Miniseries or Movie’ for the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks/Gary Goetzman–produced, HBO epic, The Pacific. Set in the Pacific theatre of war during WWII and based on three marines' actual diaries, this was truly an inspirational passion-project for Windon and one for which he was also honoured to receive an award at the 2011 American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Awards. Stephen is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), joining an elite group of internationally acclaimed cinematographers. He has also been a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) for many years and has garnered numerous Australian Cinematographers Society Awards (ACS), two Australian Film Institute Award nominations and a Film Critics Circle of Australia Award nomination.
